RENATA MARTINS.

Renata Martins
Owner at Renata Martins Bag, Garden & Studio, San Francisco
Hi Renata! You grew up in Brazil. Can you tell us a little bit about your childhood?
I grew up in Rio de Janeiro. We spent a lot of our free time going to Ipanema beach as kids. The beach was a total freedom for us. We had a lot of fun exploring, making friends, surfing, eating lots of ice cream and setting up beach traps! Yes, we mastered in beach traps! We were a group of 8 kids and we really had lots of fun.

You moved in San Francisco over 13 years ago. Why did you choose Mission district to live?
The Mission was warm and was more culturally diverse. I also felt in love with Dolores Park. Back then it was less popular and pretty relaxing.

Your garden is a giant city garden! I know you love it, can you tell us what do you like the most about it?
This garden is the sunniest and warmest place in this city. It's my private oasis.
I can't think of one aspect, but the whole garden. The veggie garden, the trees, the chicken, the birds and my favorite, the hummingbirds.

What do you miss about Brazil?
Ipanema beach, my family, friends and "Acaraje" (a spicy deep fried cake with dried shrimp).

Your studio is in a building called Art Explosion Studios. Is there a story that you can share with us about this place?
When I moved in with my husband I had to find a place to do  my sewing. So I found this studio. It's near my house and the best cafe is right on the corner!

What are you working on at the moment?
I am working on new ideas to design fabrics for a new collection of handbags. I am taking silk screen classes which is really exciting for me!  I want to be able to play more with the designs. I designed my " Ipanema" fabric and I have it printed for me. I love the idea of having a unique design for the fabrics I use on my bags.

What inspire you to create new pieces?
I am inspired by life and art in general. That could be a book, a painting, or a simple everyday object. Traveling is also very inspiring for me.

What object, tool or anything else you absolutely can't work without?
My collection of Gingher scissors! I just can't let anyone touching them.

Can you describe your job in 3 words?
Fun, creative and love!

Are there some artists that you would love to or would have loved to meet?
Sophie Calle and Carmen Miranda. I saw Sophie Calle's exhibition on "Take care of yourself" and felt in love with her work.  I have been a big Fan of Carmen Miranda since I am a little girl! I am making a Halloween costume for my 2 1/2 year old. She will be a golden Carmen Miranda!

What would you like to work on one day?
Costume design!

What is your favorite place to eat when you're around your studio?
Atlas cafe is around the corner. They have great food, best soups in town and the guys that work there are great!  I can go to other places near by but I just love to go to Atlas.

Do you have a secret boutique or space that you love in SF and you'd like to share with us?
I love all boutiques that support local artists!

Describe SF in 3 words.
Architecture, art, community.

Please take 3 instant pictures of whatever you want!
